Q: I am participating in a certificate or competition program other than CM, RCM, ABRSM, ASTACAP, SYMF, Satori, WMCF, etc. How can I determine my playing level in this case?
A: Discuss this playing level information (above) with your private instructor, teacher, section coach, or director. They will easily determine your playing level by referring to this chart.
| LAYP Playing Level 5 – 6 Audition Requirements | |
| Once you determine your playing level, choose one out of the following audition types. |
Audition Type 1: This option will be suitable for you if you have participated in a certificate program, such as CM, RCM, ABRSM, etc., or if you have been taking private lessons at locations such as a home, private studio, institute, conservatory, school, music academy, community music program, etc., and participating in ensembles such as a local youth orchestra, concert band, wind ensemble, symphonic band, community orchestra/band, school orchestra/band, etc.
| Scale | Play scale, arpeggio (tonic), and chromatic in one octave, one & half, or two octaves (ascending & descending) as fast as possible to demonstrate fluency in the key in which your solo piece is written. If is written in the minor key, play melodic minor. If your solo piece is atonal or non-traditional, play F-sharp major or E-flat melodic minor scale. |
| Etude | Play one etude. If the etude is too short (below 24 measures), add one more etude. |
| Solo | Play one solo piece. If the piece is too short (below 24 measures), add one more solo piece. |
| Length | It depends on your solo piece and etude. Suggested video length: 3-7 minutes |
Audition Type 2: This option may be suitable for you if you have participated in a school music program, such as full orchestra, concert band, symphonic band, wind ensemble, marching band, etc., while also taking private lessons.
| Scale | Play scale, arpeggio (tonic), and chromatic scale in one octave, one & half, or two octaves (ascending & descending) as fast as possible to demonstrate fluency in the key in which your solo piece is written. If you play multiple pieces in different keys, choose one key. If is written in the minor key, play melodic minor. If your solo piece is atonal or non-traditional, play F-sharp major or E-flat melodic minor scale. |
| Selects | Select and play 3 short pieces from band method books like Essential Elements for Band or Standard of Excellence |
| Excerpts | Select and play three band or orchestra excerpts. Excerpts from your current band/orchestra pieces are acceptable. |
| Length | It depends your selects and excepts. Suggested video length: 3-7 minutes |
Audition Type 3: for percussion only
| Scale | Play scale, tonic arpeggio, and chromatic in one octave, one & half, or two octaves (ascending & descending) as fast as possible to demonstrate fluency in the key in which your solo piece is written. Play on a marimba or keyboard percussion instrument. If is written in the minor key, play melodic minor. Audition Type 2: This option may be suitable for you if you have participated in a school music program, such as full orchestra, concert band, symphonic band, wind ensemble, marching band, etc., while also taking private lessons.
| Scale | Play scale, arpeggio (tonic), and chromatic scale in maximum playable range (ascending & descending) as fast as possible to demonstrate fluency in the key in which your solo piece is written.
