FAQ

Qualification & Registration

Q: I am a participant of the Summer Concert 2022. May I participate in this series?

A: Yes! If you are a finalist who completed all the intensive rehearsals and concert either online or in-person for this past Summer Concert, you are eligible to participate.

Q: Do I need to audition for this series?

A: No! All the returning students are eligible to participate without an additional audition.

Q: Do you accept a new student for this series?

A: Yes! New students need to take the online audition process. As the space is limited, the priority will go first to the returning students.

Q: Can I register for all three series?

A: Yes! It is highly recommended unless you have time conflicts with your school/community orchestra/choir concerts, exams, competitions, camps, workshops, family events, or any other engagements

Q: In case of schedule conflicts, can a student participate in one of the three chamber series?

A: Yes!

Q: Even if a student applies for one series, s/he may not get in because the space is limited. Is this correct?

A: Yes, that is correct, but you can secure a space if you register as early as possible. Now the spaces are available. If they are full, we plan to announce the closure.

Q: How do you select the soloists?

A: The Concert Committee selects the soloists for each series based on participants’ this past summer concert audition results, experiences, engagements, and current school grade level etc.. The notification is sent personally by email after the deadline as of September 1, 2022.

Size of Chamber Ensemble

Q: What does a chamber music series orchestra look like?

A: It is a small or medium size ensemble which consists of 12 to 25 players.

Repertoire Selection

Q: I was wondering if I could choose the solo piece that I will play, because I am currently practicing Weber Clarinet Concerto no. 1 first movement. If I cannot choose the piece, when will I know what the piece is? It is an honor to be considered.

A: Yes, you can do so. Potential soloists will be asked to submit their solo repertoire by August 15 usually after the summer concert. You may put that solo piece as your priority #1 in the repertoire. Once we receive all the submissions, we will review them, screening them as well to see if there are song/piece conflicts or any other issues.

Dress Code

Q: What is the dress code?

A: Click here to see the LAYP Dress Code

Q: My child will be playing as a soloist and I’m trying to plan her outfit. If she’s also going to be playing with the ensemble, how should she dress? Should she wear the white top with black bottom, then she changes to a different color dress when she plays as soloist? Will I be able to help her change backstage? What do the soloists normally do?

A: She does not need to change clothes. Soloists will wear their own free-color/formal concert dress. Watch the concert video in which a piano soloist is playing the timpani wearing her soloist dress. A soloist may wear a white cardigan when playing as an orchestra member and put it off when playing as a soloist. In the 2022 summer concert, the flute soloist wore an additional white top in a cardigan type onto her existing soloist dress when she was playing as an orchestral player.

Rehearsal

Q: Do I need to attend both rehearsals for 4:00-6:00 PM & 7:00-9:00 PM?

A: It depends on the number of the participants. If there are many participants, two or more groups of the chamber ensembles will be formed and their rehearsal time slots will be arranged.

Q: Are the rehearsals in-person or online?

A: We will offer both in-person & online rehearsal options so that the participants can be flexible to go smoothly along with their other schedules.

Q: May I receive the link for the Zoom meetings?

A: Click here for the link

Cost

Q: What cost is involved?

A: There will be a registration fee. Each registration fee for orchestral player is $250 for Chamber Music Series 1, $200 for Chamber Music Series 2, & $250 for Chamber Music Series 3. Your registration fee and our fund from the grant will cover all the concert expenses for the 2022-23 season. A soloist fee will be added to Chamber Music Series 2023-24 to cover the expense of arrangements and music library.

Q: Do we need to purchase concert tickets?

A: No! The concert will be a free admission event but you need to RSVP via Google Forms when we send out. Ticket sales will be launched in the 2023-24 season.

Q: Do you accept donations for this series?

A: Yes! We accept your donations for the Chamber Music Series.

Commute

Q: I live in San Diego and it may be difficult to attend all the rehearsals due to the commuting issues. Am I alright to attend the online rehearsals?

A: Yes, that would be fine. Please plan to attend a minimum of one in-person rehearsal out of three rehearsals.

Miscellaneous

Q: Since concert 2 is taking place in Las Vegas, Nevada, could you give the recommendation to book a few nights?

A: As it is the one-day schedule (2:00 rehearsal & 4:00 concert), you may plan a one-day trip. If you plan to stay at hotels, ask your parents to search “Las Vegas hotel without casino”

COVID-19 Safety Requirements

Q: Are we required to show proof of full vaccination for Chamber Music Series?

A: No! The policy was updated. The concert venues no longer require vaccinations for performers or audience members. Masks will still be required for audience members and recommended for performers. We will keep you up to date regarding the safety requirements.
