Audition for Orchestral Piano and Pipe Organ
Scale, Arpeggio, & Chromatic: Play the three, four or maximum-octave scale, arpeggio, & chromatic (HT) as fast as possible to demonstrate fluency in the key in which your solo audition piece is written before you perform it. If it is written in the minor key, play the melodic minor. To play the relative major or harmonic minor is optional. If your solo piece is atonal or non-traditional, play F-sharp major or E-flat melodic minor scale. It is optional to play a relative or parallel minor or chromatic scale.

Notes: This audition is not for the Piano Concerto Competition but for orchestral piano or pipe organ. This implies that a piano or pipe organ instrument is considered one of the orchestral instruments, alongside violin, flute, trumpet, timpani, etc. Some of the repertoires may involve the inclusion of a piano or organ in instrumentation or orchestration, and vice versa.
FAQ: Is there a specific reason why the suggested repertoire for the piano/organ audition is all concertos?
A: Concerto is one of the great musical forms in which orchestral students can experience/express group playing and harmony (Italian, from concertare ‘harmonize’). To perform a concerto is strongly recommended not only for piano/organ students but also other orchestral instrumental students as you can see their syllabus on our website.
