  • Woodwind: Flute, Piccolo, Oboe, English Horn, Clarinet (Bb/A, Eb, Bass), Saxophone (Sop. Alto, Tenor, Bar.)
  • Brass: Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba
  • Percussion: Timpani, Non-Pitched Percussions, Keyboard Percussions; needs to demonstrate skills in timpani, snare drum, & marimba as a basic requirement

Playing Level 5 – 6 Audition Requirements
Once you determine your playing level, choose one out of the following audition types.

Audition Type 1

ScalePlay scale, arpeggio (tonic), and chromatic in one octave, one & half, or two octaves (ascending & descending) as fast as possible to demonstrate fluency in the key in which your solo piece is written.
EtudePlay one etude. If the etude is too short (below 24 measures), add one more etude.
SoloPlay one solo piece. If the piece is too short (below 24 measures), add one more solo piece.
LengthIt depends on your solo piece and etude. Suggested video length: 3-7 minutes

Audition Type 2

ScalePlay scale, arpeggio (tonic), and chromatic scale in one octave, one & half, or two octaves (ascending & descending) as fast as possible to demonstrate fluency in the key in which your solo piece is written. If you play multiple pieces in different keys, choose one key.
SelectsSelect and play 3 short pieces from band method books like Essential Elements for Band or Standard of Excellence
ExcerptsSelect and play three band or orchestra excerpts. Excerpts from your current band/orchestra pieces are acceptable.
LengthIt depends your selects and excepts. Suggested video length: 3-7 minutes

Audition Type 3: for percussion only

ScalePlay scale, tonic arpeggio, and chromatic in one octave, one & half, or two octaves (ascending & descending) as fast as possible to demonstrate fluency in the key in which your solo piece is written. Play on a marimba or keyboard percussion instrument.
MarimbaPlay solo piece or etude. If it is too short (below 24 measures), add one more piece or etude.
TimpaniPlay solo piece or etude. If it is too short (below 24 measures), add one more piece or etude.
Snare DrumPlay solo piece or etude. If it is too short (below 24 measures), add one more piece or etude.
LengthIt depend on your solo piece and etude. Suggested video length: 3-7 minutes

Notes on chromatic scale:
1)You may start on a lower or higher playable note than the examples above, depending on your instrument’s range. 2)You can play maximum-octave scale of your instrument.
3)Woodwind or keyboard percussion may run through without breaks between octaves.

Playing Level 7 – 10 Audition Requirements
Once you determine your playing level, choose one out of the following audition types.

Audition Type 1

ScalePlay scale, arpeggio (tonic), and chromatic in maximum playable range (ascending & descending) as fast as possible to demonstrate fluency in the key in which your solo piece is written.
SoloSelect a solo piece like a sonata, variation, or concerto. Play one fast movement. You may play a half movement or the  exposition section only.
LengthIt depends on a length of your solo piece. Suggested video length: 3-15 minutes

Audition Type 2

ScalePlay scale, arpeggio (tonic), and chromatic scale in maximum playable range (ascending & descending) as fast as possible to demonstrate fluency in the key in which your solo piece is written. If you play multiple pieces in different keys, choose one key.
ExcerptsSelect and play three band or orchestra excerpts. Excerpts from your current band/orchestra pieces are acceptable.
LengthIt depends on your excerpts. Suggested length: 3-15 minutes

Audition Type 3: for percussion only

ScalePlay scale, tonic arpeggio, and chromatic in three or four octaves (ascending & descending) as fast as possible to demonstrate fluency in the key in which your solo piece is written. Play on a marimba or keyboard percussion instrument.
MarimbaPlay solo piece, etude, or band/orchestra excerpt (an excerpt from your current band/orchestra pieces is acceptable).
TimpaniPlay solo piece, etude, or band/orchestra excerpt (an excerpt from your current band/orchestra pieces is acceptable).
